RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Nursing students increasingly report being stressed. As a potential treatment, students are using marijuana, according to nursing schools. Currently, there is no standardized guideline for the use of marijuana or marijuana testing for nursing students. This article discusses several concerns about clinical nursing students' use of marijuana for stress and anxiety relief.

Nurse leaders depend upon resiliency skills to support their practice. It is important to provide opportunities for nursing students to learn, practice, and observe these skills, which are needed to navigate challenging work environments. This article describes the impact of a resiliency curricular component in a grant-funded BSN elective course, Concepts of Primary Care. Program evaluation was performed using a pre/posttest format and 2 surveys, the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) and the Brief Resilience Coping Scale (BRCS). Three open-ended questions were administered upon completion of the elective course. A concurrent nested design was utilized with a thematic analysis undertaken to analyze qualitative data. Analysis of quantitative data was performed using descriptive statistics. Undergraduate BSN students showed an overall increase in resiliency (BRS: P = .112; BCRS: P = .064), and responses to open-ended questions supported the ability to apply and analyze most of the resiliency skills presented during the didactic portion of the elective course. This course promoted the development and refinement of undergraduate BSN student resilience skills. Integration of resilience content in the primary care course also supported student professional development. The addition of resiliency concepts and skills into undergraduate nursing curricula is recommended to enhance the ability of novice nurses to address work-related challenges and promote career satisfaction for the future.

BACKGROUND: The role of paramedics has expanded significantly over the past two decades, requiring advanced skills and education to meet the demands of diverse healthcare settings. In 2021, the academic requirements for paramedics were raised to a bachelor's degree to align with other registered professions. The limited evidence on effective paramedic practice education necessitates a novel or new examination of unique learning methods, emphasising the need to establish effective learning relationships between mentors and learners to enhance professional respect and support achieving learning outcomes. This study aimed to investigate expectations between student paramedics and their mentors, focusing on the learning dynamics within paramedic education. METHODS: This qualitative study used purposive sampling to recruit participants from two distinct cohorts: student paramedics from the University of Stirling and Practice Educator Mentors from the Scottish Ambulance Service. Focus groups were conducted to illuminate comprehensive insights into participants' expectations regarding practice education and their respective roles in the learning process. Codebook thematic analysis was used to assess the alignment of these expectations. RESULTS: Findings illustrate important challenges within practice placement across learning paradigms and highlight the attitudes surrounding the integration of higher education and expectations of practice placements. These challenges encompass systemic barriers, including the support provided to mentors as they assume increased responsibilities and barriers that deter qualified staff from initially undertaking this role. CONCLUSION: The study aimed to assess expectations between practice educators and students within the paramedic profession in Scotland. The methodology effectively identified key themes from comprehensive data, marking the first primary research in this field. There are disparities in learning styles, expectation measurement, and attitudes toward higher education during practice placements, which could significantly impact the teaching and assessment processes. The findings suggest increased support for practice educators, educational programs addressing challenges of mentorship, and stronger links between higher education institutes and the Scottish Ambulance Service. Further research is needed to understand the extent of the expectation gap, how expectations evolve, and to develop strategies to address disparities.

BACKGROUND: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based protocol for early identification and treatment for substance use. Adolescents are a high-risk group for substance use. METHOD: SBIRT simulation was conducted among nursing students (n = 79). Surveys were administered before (pretest), immediately after (posttest 1), and 3 weeks (posttest 2) after simulation. Outcome scores including attitude, role security, therapeutic commitment, knowledge, confidence, competence, readiness, and response to scenarios and cases were compared between traditional undergraduate nursing students who received educational reinforcement before the posttest 2 survey and postbaccalaureate students. RESULTS: Mean scores for attitude, role security, knowledge, confidence, competence, readiness, and scenarios or cases improved significantly after the simulation (p < .005). Traditional undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students had similar posttest 1 and posttest 2 scores. CONCLUSION: After SBIRT simulation, outcomes improved and were maintained after educational reinforcement, which could increase the success of interventions for substance use among adolescents. BACKGROUND: Nurses commonly experience psychological trauma with high risk for a host of mental health concerns such as suicide, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, as well as high rates of burnout and moral injury. Despite rigorous academic preparation, baccalaureate nursing education curricula lack content on the widespread effects of trauma. METHOD: Using a trauma informed care (TIC) model, an innovative course called Trauma Informed Care for Nursing Action (TIC4NA) was created. RESULTS: This course allows students to safely explore the profession of nursing to transform their learning about trauma related to patient care, the nursing community, and society. CONCLUSION: TIC curriculum delivery offers supportive strategies to mitigate negative outcomes during nursing school. This content could have positive effects on nurse and nursing student retention as well as mitigating a barrage of negative outcomes for individual nurses and the nursing profession. BACKGROUND: Education providers teach numeracy to undergraduate nursing students using a diverse range of approaches. Proficiency in numeracy skills is critical for patient safety; however, alarmingly, the accuracy rate of calculations by both undergraduate nurses and RNs is reported to be low. METHOD: The literature search yielded 1,180 articles published between 1994 and 2022. The assessment of the studies was reported using the PRIMSA extension for Scoping Reviews. RESULTS: Thirty-nine articles were included in the review. A diverse range of approaches were used to teach numeracy including learning theory, methods of calculation, learning environment, and examination aids. CONCLUSION: This review highlights the plethora of approaches for teaching numeracy within undergraduate nursing education. Internationally, there were limited studies on the most effective teaching approaches; therefore, developing a robust evidence-based numeracy framework would be beneficial to guide non-nursing instructors in teaching undergraduate nurses. BACKGROUND: Although many nursing programs include health equity in their curriculum, research investigating the efficacy of such curricula often is lacking. METHOD: Using criterion sampling, school of nursing alumni who could speak about their graduate preparation and current experiences working with diverse patient populations were recruited for this study. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 22 alumni regarding their curricular, clinical, and co-curricular experiences as graduate students to better understand the strengths and gaps in their preparation as health professionals. RESULTS: Four major themes emerged from the analysis of interview transcripts (n = 22). These themes included: (1) diversity and representation; (2) implicit bias and microaggressions; (3) skills and knowledge areas; and (4) supplemental learning through co-curricular experiences. CONCLUSION: Implications for policy, curriculum innovation, and clinical practice can better prepare students to advance care for a diverse society. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(4):228-232.].

BACKGROUND: This study analyzed publicly available resources related to environmental and climate change material available within the Canadian Bachelor of Nursing Program curricula. METHOD: This thematic review project contained two stages of data collection: (1) a comprehensive team-based review of Internet materials and (2) a digital survey of program faculties. RESULTS: Most content reviewed included references to climate change. According to survey responses from program directors (n = 12), barriers to integrating climate change content included lack of institutional support, the perception that content was not important in undergraduate curriculum, a conviction that the material would be more appropriate for public health, and an overall lack of understanding of the topic by course authors. CONCLUSION: With increasing emphasis on the importance of geopolitical health and climate change to many facets of nursing practice, nurse educators require support from colleagues and postsecondary institutions to incorporate this material into undergraduate nursing curricula. AIM: The aim of this study was to: (1) use cognitive task analysis to describe final year nursing students situation awareness in recognising, responding and escalating care of deteriorating patients in ward settings; and (2) make recommendations for training and practice. DESIGN: A mixed methods cognitive task analysis with a convergent triangulation design. METHOD: Data collection involved observations of 33 final year nursing students in simulated deteriorating patient scenarios and retrospective cognitive interviews. A process tracing technique was applied to identify the cues to deterioration participants perceived; how cue perception altered as situational demands increased; the extent that participants made connections between perceived cues and reached a situational understanding; and the factors that influenced and constrained participants situation awareness. Qualitative and quantitative findings are woven together and presented using descriptive statistics, illustrative quotations and timeline extractions. RESULTS: The median cue perception was 65.4% and 57.6% in the medical and surgical scenarios, respectively. Perception was negatively influenced by incomplete vital sign monitoring as situations escalated; limited physical assessments; passive scanning behaviours; poor task automaticity; and excessive cognitive demands. Incomplete perception, poor cue integration and underdeveloped mental models influenced situational understanding. Escalation calls did not always accurately reflect situations and a reporting mindset was evident. Clinical exposure to deteriorating patients was described as variable and opportunistic. REPORTING METHOD: The study is reported in accordance with the Good Reporting of a Mixed Methods Study (GRAMMS) checklist. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Patients and public were not involved in this research.

BACKGROUND: Humanistic education is an important part of nursing education. Final-year nursing students' perceptions of nursing humanistic education are under-investigated. This study aimed to examined final-year nursing students' perceptions of nursing humanistic education in both school and hospital. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from May to June 2022 among 107 final-year nursing students with a self-designed questionnaire. RESULTS: Final-year nursing students recognized the importance of humanistic education, scoring above 4.0 on a 1-5 scale, while their initiative to enhance humanistic qualities was relatively low. Students' satisfaction with the number of humanities courses offered was only 3.7 ± 0.862. Moreover, 62.6% of students believed there was a need to enhance humanistic environmental development including corridor culture. The "monotonous teaching format" (63.6%) and "teaching methods" (64.5%) have emerged as focal points that students identified as needing attention and improvement. CONCLUSIONS: In the future, nursing humanistic education can be enhanced by increasing the proportion of humanities, improving teaching methods, stimulating students' learning motivation, and strengthening the construction of humanistic environment.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students are prone to sleep problems that affect their core self-evaluations. However, little attention has been paid to the specific roles of emotion regulation (including cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) and resilience in this process. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore 1) the direct effect of sleep problems on core self-evaluations among nursing students; 2) the chain-mediating effect of cognitive reappraisal and resilience on the relationship between sleep problems and core self-evaluations; 3) the moderating effect of expressive suppression on the direct relationship between sleep problems and core self-evaluations; and 4) the moderating effect of expressive suppression on the indirect relationship between sleep problems affecting core self-evaluations through resilience. METHODS: A total of 345 nursing students completed a survey conducted between September and October 2022. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis, Fisher exact test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Spearman correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Additionally, the SPSS PROCESS V4.0 plug-in was used to verify the moderated chain-mediating effect. RESULTS: Sleep problems directly affected core self-evaluations among nursing students. Cognitive reappraisal and resilience played a partial chain-mediating role in the relationship between sleep problems and core self-evaluations, with expressive suppression having a direct moderating effect. CONCLUSIONS: Opportunities exist for enhancing the core self-evaluations of nursing students by addressing their sleep problems, promoting cognitive reappraisal strategies, and increasing resilience. Additionally, encouraging expressive suppression can mitigate the negative impact of sleep problems on nursing students' core self-evaluations.

RESUMEN

Clinical placements are considered one of the "hallmarks" of nursing education. In these settings, students can build upon their theoretical learning by applying knowledge, practicing skills, connecting with nurses and other medical professionals, and creating opportunities to work with diverse populations. As a result, students begin to hone their nurse identity, and build confidence and self-esteem. Importantly, the development of a nursing identity through clinical placement work is improved by integrating opportunities that increase belongingness. Campus climate plays a significant role in creating the environment necessary for belongingness to flourish and leads to enhanced student learning. Taking the role of positive campus climate into consideration, this article argues that instructors supervising undergraduate nursing students in clinical learning environments must create inclusive climates for their students to increase positive educational outcomes. Specific recommendations for creating inclusive clinical learning environments are provided.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students are frequently vulnerable to stress during their education with a high rate of attrition. Mindfulness Mediations based on Stress Reductions have been found to promote psychological well-being and mental health among nursing students. Therefore, the objective of the study was to explore the experiences of Mindfulness among undergraduate nursing students. METHODS: Qualitative Hermeneutic Phenomenology research design was adopted. Data were collected from under graduate nursing students from Chitwan Medical College, Institute of Medicine who had been practicing Mindfulness Meditation for 6 weeks. The duration of data collection was January to June 2022. Data were collected after obtaining ethical approval from Nepal Health Research Council. Focused Group Discussions were conducted to collect data by the researcher using the Focused Group Discussion guide in Nepali language. A total of three Focused Group Discussions was carried out among 12 participants in each Focused Group Discussion with a total of 36 participants. Data were analyzed by thematic analysis technique based on Giorgi's qualitative data analysis technique. RESULTS: Five developed themes were stress managed well in daily life and during examination time, present moment awareness and positivity, self-realization of inner peace and more self-acceptance, and feeling of developed future role for advocating mindfulness meditations. CONCLUSIONS: Mindfulness-based mediations have been found effective strategies among undergraduate nursing for the management of stress during daily living and during examinations, development of self-realization, increase inner peace, self-acceptance and developed skills for future role for advocating mindfulness meditations.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this review was to determine the current state of the literature for notetaking among nursing students and identify implications for future nursing education and research. Notetaking is frequently used by college students and is a proven learning strategy. There has been less research for notetaking among nursing students than students in other disciplines. CONTENT: This narrative review was completed using the method described by Ferrari. Seven electronic databases were searched from 2018 to 2023 using the terms notetaking, students, and nursing. SUMMARY: Seven of 65 articles were included in this review. Upon analysis, three categories of research findings were identified: learning style, notetaking skill, and notetaking and technology. OUTLOOK: Nursing faculty should be aware of learning styles, notetaking strategies, and notetaking skill when designing assignments and course content for students. Future research should be done on this population to strengthen the findings of current literature.

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of perceptions of decent work for nursing students' future career choices, we attempted to determine potential classifications and characteristics of nursing students' perceptions of decent work so that targeted interventions could be developed. METHODS: A convenience sample of 1004 s- to fourth-year nursing students completed the General Information Questionnaire, Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale, Occupational Identity Questionnaire, and Decent Work Perceptions Scale in a cross-sectional survey in Heilongjiang Province, China, resulting in 630 valid questionnaires with a valid return rate of 62.75%. Nursing students' perceptions of decent work were defined using descriptive and regression analysis. RESULTS: Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified three subgroups: low perceived decent work group, medium perceived decent work group, and high perceived decent work group, accounting for 4.76%, 69.37%, and 25.87% of the sample, respectively. The results of unordered multiclass logistic regression show that nursing students with relatively low levels of perceived decent work are more likely to have a low professional identity, a lack of respect for nursing seniors, an involuntary choice of nursing major, and a low family income. CONCLUSION: Different types of nursing students have different perceptions of decent work, and these universities and related departments can use different educational guidance strategies.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the problematization methodology impact on the knowledge of nursing and medical students about hypodermoclysis. METHOD: quasi-experimental study conducted with 22 undergraduate nursing and medical students from a public Brazilian higher education institution. The students participated in the educational intervention using the problematization methodology based on the Arch of Maguerez. A previously validated questionnaire was used to determin' the students' knowledge level about hypodermoclysis. This instrument was applied before and after the educational intervention. The results were compared by McNemar's test and Student's t test for paired samples. RESULTS: when comparing the correct answers before and after the intervention, there was a significant increase in 75% of the questions (p<0.05), including theoretical and practical aspects of hypodermoclysis. The mean score on students' self-assessment of the ability to explain (0.9 versus 5.9 points) and perform hypodermoclysis (1.9 versus 5.0) was significantly higher after applying the problematization methodology (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: the problematization methodology had a positive impact on the students' knowledge about hypodermoclysis. The number of correct answers after the educational intervention was higher than the initial assessment. The problematization methodology can be incorporated into the teaching-learning process of nursing and medical students for teaching procedures such as hypodermoclysis.
